Lilly Putts to Victory
GWCCs Annual Golf Day held at Weston Park last Friday saw a new team take the prestigious winner's title. 2nd XI Captain Richard Lilwall's side came through the pack to narrowly beat Cameron Black's team to claim the glory, with past victors Graham Richardson's team making a spirited defence of the title in 3rd place. Richardson was seen with his head in his hands and a glass of bitter lemon as he struggled to comprehend how his side could have been beaten.
The two nearest-the-pin winners were Graham Littlewood on the 5th and Chairman, Drew Payne, with an exquisite approach to the 16th. Longest drive on the 9th was awarded to Graham Richardson although the stewards were far from happy with the recording of the shot as money was rumoured to have changed hands.
Thanks to all who took part on the day and we look forward to Lilly defending his title later in the year. Details to follow. |

CLUB DINNER A BIG SUCCESS!
Mike Gatting and Steve Kindon were the guest speakers at last Thursday's annual club dinner held at the Ramada Jarvis, Norwich.
Former England Test Captain Gatting ran through an array of stories from his career including his eye-witness recollection of the 'ball of the century' delivered by Australian legend Shane Warne.
Kindon had the audience in stitches with an hilarious account of his career as a professional footballer spanning 15 years, where he made over 400 league and cup appearances and scored 160 professional goals.
The evening included comedian Lea Roberts and an auction of various sporting memorabilia.
Many thanks to all who attended and special thanks to Simon Chipperfield who organised this thoroughly successful evening.
Look out for details of next years event! |

Touch of Garlick Added to the Pot
18 Year old Australian allrounder Alex Garlick is the latest name to be added to the first team squad for the coming season. Alex plays for the Adelaide Cricket Club in the South Australian Cricket Association where he has learnt his trade, and recently had the opportunity to bowl at the touring Sri Lankan national side. Alex will also be involved with the coaching of the juniors on a Monday night. All at Gt. Witchingham welcome him to the club, and look forward to seeing him perform during the coming season. |

21.02.2008
Shaw re-signs for 2008
Lance Shaw will once again lead the first team bowling attack after re-signing for season 2008 and all at the club will be looking forward to him providing the same sort of return as last season when he finished as the 2nd leading wicket taker in the EAPL. Lance has also scored his maiden first class fifty for Auckland during the current New Zealand season, so we are hopeful that he will spend more time at the crease wielding the willow as well! |

21.02.2008
Local Players Sign Up
Ben Harvey and Jonathan Spelman have signed up for the coming season and will be looking to make the most of the increased opportunities on offer at Gt. Witchingham CC.
Ben played for Fakenham last season in the EAPL where he scored over 300 league runs. He will also take over the wicket keeping duties from Drew Payne.
Jon represented Vauxhall Mallards in 2007, and he will undoubtedly relish the extra opportunities with both bat and ball after being starved of them at Vauxhall. He is also a member of the Norfolk County squad, along with brother James.
It is hoped they will both also be involved with the Youth coaching on a Monday evening.
The club extends a warm welcome and looks forward to many match winning performances. |

Speakers Confirmed for Club Dinner
The Club's Annual Dinner will be held on April 10th, 2008 at the Jarvis Hotel where Mike Gatting and Steve Kindon will be the star attractions. Gatting had a distinguished England career, before moving into coaching and commentating, and he is now employed by the ECB as Managing Director Cricket Partnerships, which covers first-class as well as recreational cricket, with a view to enhancing communications between the various levels of the game.
Kindon is one of the genuine "characters" of football, a great raconteur whose contribution to any dinner is guaranteed to have the audience rolling with laughter. With over 160 first-class goals to his credit, this former strikerleft winger starred with Wolves, Burnley and Huddersfield in the 70’s and 80’s and he also won caps for England in the Youth team, the under-23’s and England B.
Comedian Lea Roberts will round things off for what promises to be a great night.
Please see the social events section for all the details. |

Chairmans Weston Victory
The 3rd Great Witchingham CC Golf Day was held last Thursday at Weston Park and chairman Graham Richardson's team came out on top in a very close finish, just pipping Cameron Black's team by 0.2 on the scorecard.
Richardson was naturally delighted after several woeful displays over the past two years, although several eyebrows were raised at his selection policy of scouring the county for any Norfolk County Golf Player who fancied a game!
Drew Payne's team finished in third place to complete the top three positions.
The winners of the two nearest the pin holes were Geoff Roff and Noel Alexander, with A. Wimmer taking out the longest drive prize.
Thanks to all who took part, and we look forward to seeing you next time with Richardson seen on the phone to Tiger Woods as he starts preparing his side to defend the title! |

EAPL Target Secured
A historic day in the club's history was achieved on Saturday, 9th September when the 1st XI beat Mildenhall by 71 runs in the play-off final to gain promotion to the East Anglian Premier League for next season. It was a victory achieved against the odds as 5 of the regular 1st XI were unavailable. However, the replacements more than held their own as Witchingham scored 232-6, with Stephan Le Roux leading the way with 88n.o., well supported by father and son, Shaun and Sam Arthurton, who scored 32 and 41 respectively. In reply, Mildenhall were bowled out for 161 with Gary Reynolds taking 3 wickets and Simon Chipperfield and Stephan Le Roux taking 2 each.
Chairman Graham Richardson was almost lost for words but managed to say how proud he was of the players, especially those who came in and performed so well on the day.
The hard work really begins now as Witchingham plan for the coming season. |

First XI Finish Runners Up
After a hard fought season, the 1st XI could not quite emulate last season's success and had to settle for the Runners Up spot this year.
Our drive to regain the Premier League title was curtailed somewhat by some inclement weather and a strong Horsford team.
On an individual level, Carl Rogers and Shaun Arthurton were both outstanding with the bat and Stuart Evans took over 30 League wickets. This was backed up by vital contributions by all the squad throughout the season and we look forward to regaining the title next season. |
